For hundreds of years, across Europe and in the New World, one generation of women after another treasured the finest laces and trims. The fortunate ones had a neighborhood shop, like the one above, where they could find Valenciennes lace or broderie anglaise eyelet or just the right Swiss handloom trim for a special frock. La Dentellière means lacemaker or lace merchant in French.
First as a young mother creating heirlooms for my young daughter and later as an antique reproduction dollmaker, I have collected fine old laces and trims. I have shopped the flea markets in Paris, antique stores in Burgundy and Normandy as well as many small stores across the American South.
